Searching for the ultimate mountain bike ride
I managed to avoid jumping on the Evil bandwagon before anything was launched. Then the rumours and following announcement that Thomas Vanderham was on board and I was tempted. A new bike company using technology from Dave Weagle and a big mountain freerider on board to develop a bike? Vanderham didn’t ride the Revolt at the Red Bull Rampage and the first images didn’t really blow me away so I kept quiet.
Things have really stepped up since then. Steve Smith came onboard to race World Cups and then MS Intense turned into MS Evil, with Matti Lehikoinen and Filip Polc. Shaun Palmer has been testing one and even Dave Watson, who has been on Kona forever has one.
Taking a look at the Revolt technology they have the Delta (Dave’s Extra Legitimate Travel Apparatus) system which was conceived to achieve very complex leverage rate curves that can be used to tune for varying track conditions, spring, and damper parameters. The Delta System has multiple points of adjustment for fine tuning geometry and performance which is where the FlipChip comes in as a simple way to change this geometry without affecting shock or wheel rate. The geometry can be also be adjusted at the head tube using an ‘Evil Super Wrench’, supplied. In the links are 4 high precision Norglide Composite Bearings which are self lubricating and were specifically engineered for the Delta System. All of which adds up to an easy to change setup for whatever you ride.
The Revolt comes as a frame only with six extra logo stickers in various colors, so you can match your kit. The frames also come with touch up paint. All cool. There has to be a downside and it’s the price - £2395 for the white frame. You can get a complete Scott Gambler for that but it compares well with other high end bikes like Intense and Foes.
I have a question though, is the Revolt now purely a World Cup bike and not what originally appeared to be a freeride bike? even Vanderham has had a go at racing it. Never the less, the more I see it, the more I like it and it currently holds the number one spot on my downhill bike to buy list.
